Encyclopedia Updated [Oct. 19th, 2009|11:10 pm]

Lots of revamping going on with the new home of the BoF including, but not limited to, the addition of Chapter 32 (thanks Mike). I hope to actually get to read the thing this week!

Seems to be some sort of conflict between pbworks and Firefox that makes text disappear halfway through large pages--usually on PC rather than Mac. Not sure how to solve for this at the moment, other than to chop up the chapters into sub-chapters.

Anyways, all comments and suggestions are welcomed and encouraged--as well as open editing of the wiki. Still in the process of changing some page layouts. Let me know if you have any questions.

Doteasy Hosting [Sep. 2nd, 2009|09:34 pm]

When bookoffluids.com expires this Friday, I don't know what'll happen to the site. I do have a backup that's a little less than 8.5 MB and I'm willing to email it to anyone who wants it.

My goal is to make the wiki the new home (http://bookoffluids.pbworks.com). I'm already thinking of ways to transfer our current chapters and gibberish in the most pain-free way possible. The ease of wiki editing seems inviting. I know the Encyclopedia is a mess; incomplete, in some cases, but I feel this might be healthy, in some strange way.

If anyone has any questions or concerns about the continued use of pbworks, let me know.

Okay, sorry to have to do this when you're apparently ill, Wally but I'm going to have to put my foot down now. The Book has been niggling in the back of my mind demanding completion. Poor Joe has been hosting a site for years. We started this EIGHT YEARS AGO. I want it finished before I have to start writing my thesis and you embark on your career as a tortured poet. Since unlike Otto you haven't had the good grace to resign, or even talk to me about it, these are the options I'm giving you.

1) Wrap up what you have into some kind of cohesive whole before the end of September (when my second academic year starts) and post it, whatever state it's in.
2) Give what you have to me and I will try to finish/tie it into something coherent.
3) Ignore this completely. I will take this to mean that you want me to finish the book and I will write both the final and penultimate chapter.

R.E. Concerns you raised to Joe.

a) Leave defeating Moebius to me. I will do my best with what you have given me. It's all I can.
b) We are pan narrans. We like happy endings. As we know, the only things that can truly end are stories, and even those are reincarnated until no-one remembers them. I started it, and I will finish it with the ending I see fit.

You have until the end of August to decide, then I will make the decision for you.

Web Hosting Expiration [Aug. 7th, 2009|09:39 pm]
The Book of Fluids

Our Doteasy hosting plan expires again on August 31st, which isn't a problem. The problem is the domain bookoffluids.com, which needs to be renewed September 4th at the reasonable price of US$25.

Thing is, I don't see the point in paying for it anymore. That's not to say I don't care about The Book, I just don't feel I'm getting a fair return on my investment.

I've got an idea, however: rather than paying for a domain that only draws a very small crowd, we should use something more affordable (like free) to host our material, like a wiki.

So our PBwiki (now called PBworks, apparently) was once originally on a special plan I purchased that gave us some extra features and helped rid us of ads. Now, the cost is going up ($8 per user per month) and we just haven't done anything with those extra features. The gig is up on November 23rd.

I've been considering moving both wiki and chapters to wikispaces, and have actually done some preliminary work, or I could leave the Encyclopedia Fluidica where it is and just ad the stories and gibberish to PBwiki, however it turns out after the hosting plan changes. But I'm at a point where I cannot/should not make the decision on my own. That's why I'm asking for opinions, suggestions, solutions.

tl;dr I'm not paying to host anything BoF-related anymore. Solve for this.

On Joel And Interlude... [Mar. 25th, 2009|11:34 am]

I apologize. I've been with the sickness for the past few days, so forgive me if my congestion comes across in this post.

One of the observations I made in writing about Joel was that his goals and reasons for being have changed dramatically over the course of the past couple years since I first came up with the angel/demon. I think a good part of that evolution comes from my changing viewpoints of my personal faith over the years. It became difficult in the middle of the short story to deliver what I thought would be Joel's driving desire. At some points in the Book of Fluids, he simply wants to kill Oscar. In other points, he wants to "rejoin" with him in some kind of Vader/Skywalker-esque fashion. I think it got to a point that I didn't even properly understand how they came to be and what they wanted. Even as separate extremes, they both have their own opposing balances. Joel's typically nasty all throughout–just to varying degrees–but Oscar has moments where he is less than "pious" and not just due to the effects of the Soul Mirror.

Also, having read recent developments, I've started taking a real hard look at Interlude... I had always been under the impression that the piece was supplemental and not required reading--moreso believed that based on the fact that so much of it seems like inside jokes. And I'm on the outside.

But my first clue that I should have taken better notice comes with Geschichte der Palantenna, where it recounts Lord Gauss' confrontation with Lady First Critic Ninqueriel, ruler of Palantenna, daughter of Anaxerretibes.

Of course, I've always been confused as to where the Pyramid is. First, Mihai Costescu finds it on the home planet of the Chamaleen. Then it's orbiting Gamazoha Prime on OCON-G. Then we find out it's been on far off Palantenna for centuries upon centuries? Was this one of those evolutionary writing developments that are a natural result of the project, or am I mistaking the Pyramid for something else? After all, they don't come right out and say Pyramid, they say [cube upon the rock?].

Then I'm certain there's other small details hidden within the remainder of Interlude... but I just haven't had the opportunity to delve further.

Seriously. How long now? If you don't finish before I have to start writing my thesis, I will finish the book myself. You have two years.
