Web Hosting Expiration [Aug. 7th, 2009|09:39 pm]
The Book of Fluids
Our Doteasy hosting plan expires again on August 31st, which isn't a problem. The problem is the domain bookoffluids.com, which needs to be renewed September 4th at the reasonable price of US$25.

Thing is, I don't see the point in paying for it anymore. That's not to say I don't care about The Book, I just don't feel I'm getting a fair return on my investment.

I've got an idea, however: rather than paying for a domain that only draws a very small crowd, we should use something more affordable (like free) to host our material, like a wiki.

So our PBwiki (now called PBworks, apparently) was once originally on a special plan I purchased that gave us some extra features and helped rid us of ads. Now, the cost is going up ($8 per user per month) and we just haven't done anything with those extra features. The gig is up on November 23rd.

I've been considering moving both wiki and chapters to wikispaces, and have actually done some preliminary work, or I could leave the Encyclopedia Fluidica where it is and just ad the stories and gibberish to PBwiki, however it turns out after the hosting plan changes. But I'm at a point where I cannot/should not make the decision on my own. That's why I'm asking for opinions, suggestions, solutions.

tl;dr I'm not paying to host anything BoF-related anymore. Solve for this.

For some reason, I agree--I have a feeling that in a wiki state, it'll be easier to evolve the BoF universe, but it all depends on individual interests.

I'm wondering if we should use wikispaces or PBworks, or some other free wiki service. Ads are usually inevitable, but using Ad Block Plus on Firefox usually makes surfing easier. Any suggestions on which wiki to go with?
